Hear the story of the great Nelson Mandela, Father of our Nation and learn about his childhood, the struggle and those that fought at his side. Your guide will be Xhosa who can tell you all you need to know on this tour.

DAY 1: Port Elizabeth to Kingwilliams Town

Depart from Port Elizabeth and traveling East out of Port Elizabeth we take the N2 towards Grahamstown where we stop at the Albany Cultural Museum and refreshments. We then continue through the Echo Pass built by the famous road builder, Thomas Baine, to Fort Beaufort. Just outside this town is Alice, home to the famous Fort Hare University where many of the African heads of State attended. From Alice we follow the Struggle Route to Kingwilliamstown to visit Steve Biko Museum and Grave.

DAY 2: Kingwilliams Town to Mthatha

After breakfast we continue our journey and travel towards Butterworth, originally a mission station and also a town close to the seat of Hintsa ka Khawuta, chief of the Gcaleka people of the Xhosa tribe. It was of great strategic importance during the early history of the Eastern Cape. It is also one of the fastest growing towns in South Africa. The next town we travel through is Idutywa which is the birthplace of Thabo Mbeki, who became President of South Africa in 1999 and into the town of Mthatha which derives its name by members of the Tembu Tribe that had a custom of interring their dead by casting them into the river with the entreaty ‘mThateBawo “Take him Father” – this was the origin of the river

DAY 3: Mthatha to East London

After breakfast we visit the Nelson Mandela Museum and hear all about the childhood of this great son of South Africa who sacrificed his life for democracy. We travel on towards Qunu where he was born and visit the Qunu Museum after which we continue to East London situation on the banks of the Buffalo River

DAY 4: East London to Port Elizabeth

Today before we depart this city steeped in the struggle history and visit the very interesting and informative museum. There will be a refreshment break at the museum before we depart for Port Elizabeth traveling the R72 which is the Coastal Route. We will have a quick last stop at Nanaga Farm Stall.
